Patrick Gibbons

I was born in the South Island but shifted to Auckland . I was educated at Auckland Boys' Grammar School where I studied Art. Upon leaving high school I began an apprenticeship in the sign-writing trade where I learnt my brush and colour mixing skills.

I owned and operated my own sign company for 25 years successfully until the advent of the computer in the industry….. a classic case of machine replacing man. The trade as I knew it was over. I decided to try something new.

After retiring as a sign-writer, I moved to Papamoa where my family had been living for many years. I began painting on canvas with acrylics. Having had no formal art education or tuition I drew on my experience of many years in the sign-writing trade. I have been painting on canvas now for six years in my studio at Papamoa.

As I am used to working on large paintings, I tend to lean towards panoramic scenes. Landscape in the Central South Island is my inspiration at present. I am never without my camera, always looking for a different angle on a scene that would make a great painting. At this stage I work inside using photos as reference, however I am looking at refining my water-colour techniques on-site. I have exhibited successfully locally and within New Zealand and my work has also been purchased by overseas buyers. I am available to do commission work and would welcome any inquiry by phone:

or 027 214 1736.
