The Annual Exhibition was opened by the Mayor on Thursday 7 July 2011 with a large number of invited guests and artists attending.

The Supreme Art Award this year was judged by the well known and international artist Susan Harrison-Tustain. The recipient of the Award is Janice Giles. Susan said Janice's painting – “Women Holding up the Sky” was well-composed and carried many meanings. This work was mixed media with pressed leaves, flowers, clay, seeds, collage, tissue and acrylic mediums. Congratulations to Janice for winning the Supreme Art Award for 2011.

The runner-up for the Supreme Art Award was Susan Watson who's pastel painting “Surf's Up” was commended by Susan for the movement of the boy running to the water's edge and also for her treatment of the water. Congratulations Susan.

This year the exhibition ran over three days – Friday 8 to Sunday 10 July and was very successful with 64artists exhibiting 157 works of art. Many comments were received on the extremely high standard of art

exhibited and the professional and pleasing way the exhibition had been presented.

Thanks to our sponsors for their continued support which has enabled the Society to display art in the best possible environment. Our sponsors were: TrustPower, Associated Lifts Ltd, The Red Studio, Ultimate Motor Group and Bethlehem Pharmacy.

To all the members who helped to make this exhibition so successful, and especially the Exhibition Committee who spent many long hours organising it, grateful thanks are extended.

SEASONAL EXHIBITION held October each year

Report on 2011 Seasonal Exhibition

The Seasonal Exhibition was held on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October at the Tauranga Contract Bridge Club, 252 Ngatai Road , Tauranga. This popular venue has a good location and is central, near the busy Ngatai and Otumoetai Road roundabout, and offers plenty of parking round the building.

This exhibition is an opportunity for members of the Tauranga Society of Artists to show some of their original works to the public. Artists' experience ranges from the very experienced (twenty years or more) to new, emerging artists. The range and style of paintings shown was exciting and interesting, in many genres such as Oils, Water Colours, Pastels, Mixed Media and Acrylic paintings.

48 artists displayed 143 paintings which had passed selection standards to be approved for exhibiting. The Society's Exhibition Sub-Committee checks for balance of colour, perspective, quality framing, creativity etc before allowing paintings to be exhibited.

Advertising was extensive in the Bay of Plenty Times , SunLive, Weekend Sun, Information websites and other publications as well as the prominent road signs displayed round the city. This year 507 people viewed the exhibition over the two days and the number of paintings sold was very satisfactory in this tight financial market. Several people indicated that they were aware that we had an exhibition at the end of October each year, but there may still be some confusion with the main exhibition in July. Comments received praised the very high level of paintings and the overall presentation.

Thanks go to all who helped to bring this exhibition to the public; this is a huge task and without the helpers, would not have been possible. Special thanks go to the Exhibition Sub-Committee for the many hours of work at meetings and behind the scenes doing the “physical stuff” to make the exhibition such a wonderful success.

Thanks go to our sponsor Otumoetai Doctors.
