MYSTERY SOCIAL BUS TRIP – APRIL 24 TH 2010 |
Organised by Dulcie Artus and Jenny Brogden
Thirty seven members and outsiders set off on a Saturday morning which threatened showers, but fortunately they didn't eventuate. They didn't know where they were going, only that it was to be a social trip for the whole day with photo opportunities, but not time to paint.

The bus headed north and soon was going through Waihi, then turned off at Paeroa, so no we weren't going to Auckland as some had supposed. On we went and stopped at Thames along the foreshore, where morning tea was produced on tables set up by the Committee. There were freshly made scones to butter and put jam and cream on, sandwiches, asparagus rolls slices and fruit loaves. It was a lovely home-made spread which the Committee had provided.

After a 20 minute stop on we went up the Coramandel Coast, which was very picturesque and one photo stop was arranged. The bus then continued on to the Rapaura Water Gardens, on the Tapu-Coroglen Road. 1 ½ hours were scheduled here for a walk through the lovely bush gardens and up to the waterfall for those who were fitter. A lunch of the shared food was then laid out by the Committee on Tables under the trees. What a sumptuous feast this was. Those who brought food to share enjoyed the variety and the special fare. Had the weather been bad a wet weather venue in the Tapu Hotel had been arranged with the friendly folk there.
After lunch the bus then moved back towards Thames to the Butterfly and Orchid Garden, where we were given access to the butterfly house. This was fascinating and lots of photos were taken. We were given a brief address from the people who ran the butterfly house outlining the life cycles and food the different species eats, all very interesting.
The bus then took us just a few minutes up the road to the Thames Society of Arts Gallery where beautiful pottery, craft and paintings were on display. It had been organised with the Thames Society that the use of their kitchen facilities be made available for making hot drinks and the food was again supplied by the Committee.
The next stop was in the Karangahake Gorge at Waikino – Con Kiernan's Contemporary Mosaic Art Studio. Con gave a talk about his mosaic work with large pieces being on display in his inside exhibition studio. He is a renowned international mosaic artist and his work was wonderful. He gave a very interesting and informative talk and several people were inspired by his work to give Mosaics a go.
The day was thoroughly enjoyed by those who went and some comments were, “ it was nice to do something a bit different”, “fantastic”, “great day out”, “best bus trip I've been on”, “when's the next one?”, “what a wonderful time”, “enjoyed the great food”, “ what a lot of organisation went into this”, “thoroughly enjoyed the whole day”. Of course everyone had their favourite venue and the weather was kind to us. It didn't matter that we were a bit late getting back at 5.30 pm as everyone was still in “happy mode”.
